Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world. While most of the coffee is grown on large plateaus and harvested with equipment, there are still some small producers. With that said, the global coffee market is very sensitive to what happens in Brazil. For example, last year Brazil experienced both a drought and a frost which severely affected the coffee harvest, causing the global market to spike. Brazilians also consume a fantastic amount of coffee—close to 20 million bags a year and growing— second only to the US. This wasn’t always the case, but the government implemented a campaign years ago, targeting children, and encouraging them to drink coffee, which obviously had the desired outcome. Swiss Water selects coffee based on the cup profile—nutty, mild, and sweet with a rich body. This profile is very typical of Brazilian coffee, as it tends to be grown at lower altitudes than most of the coffee we buy from Central America and Africa.
