Zoila Esther Guerrero is part of a growing movement of female coffee growers in Colombia. While women have always been key agents in the largely family-run coffee fincas of Colombia, only recently have we begun to see higher proportions of “cafeteras” (female coffee growers). Women like Zoila are spearheading a movement of women who are involved in every aspect of coffee production and thus become the decision-makers and gain autonomy in their work and lifestyles.
In Nariño, research shows that when women are more directly involved in operations on small farms in Colombia, coffee quality goes up. Finca La Florida is no exception. Here Zoila and her team work tirelessly as they grow Castillo beans at 1,950 m.a.s.l. The coffee is harvested in August and then washed and de-pulped before being fermented for 16 hours. The coffee is finally dried on patios for 15 days. Each step of this process is undergone with great care and attention to detail.
