The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU) was established in 1999 by General Manager Tadesse Meskela. The OCFCU has 155 cooperatives under its umbrella working with roughly 100,000 smallholder producers. The primary focus of OCFCU is to ensure a fair percentage of profits are returned to producers and their communities through direct export practices. They also work to improve social conditions by providing services to farmers and their families and increasing the quality and productivity of its members. Since its establishment, the union has contributed to over 200 infrastructure projects including 30 schools, 10 health clinics, 86 water wells as well as numerous roads and bridges.
OCFCU was featured in the documentary Black Gold, which examined the struggle of producers seeking fair prices for their high quality coffee. OCFCU has since been exonerated from the traditional bidding system which allows them to sell and export their products directly, eliminating the need for intermediaries. Since the release of Black Gold in 2006, the amount of money being funneled back to producers has tripled.
“Our hope is one day the consumer will understand what they are drinking. Consumers can bring a change if awareness is given to consumers. It is not only on coffee, all products are getting a very low price - and the producers are highly affected.”
-Tadesse Meskela, General Manager
