Andrea’s parcel of land used to belong to Don Octavio Rafael Herrera Ordoñez’ La Esperanza. At 23 hectares, it was a sizeable piece of land, and Octavio, who goes by Otto, had been managing it for 25 years. Andrea and her husband had worked the land for some time, and he provided them with the opportunity to purchase a piece from them. When we met Doña Andrea, her husband was working a shift as a parking lot attendant down in the city, while she was tending to the needs of the finca. We walked through her caturra trees and she showed us her depulper and drying patios. Since this is only her first year as a farm owner, she’s got a lot of investment for the future in mind. She hopes to build cover for her small beneficio and to re-tile her fermentation tank. We’re very encouraged to see that a young family is interested in managing coffee lands that they’ve purchased from a farmer from the previous generation.
This coffee was purchased through OnyxCoffee Exporters in Guatemala. Onyx was founded by Edwin Martinez, whose family owns the venerated FincaVista Hermosa, which is nearby in Agua Dulce.
