The Herrera Family belong to the Cooperativa Agraria de Servicios Multiples “Union Y Fe” La Coipa, formed in 2014. The Cooperative was created to assist small holder farmers in one of Peru’s most impoverished area around the city of La Coipa. The main aim is to find sustainable markets for the green coffee and improve the standard of living for the families involved.
Today the Cooperative has 220 producers as members, most of whom farm less than 4 hectares of land. For such small scale farmers, the assistance of a Cooperative can make a huge difference. The Cooperative provides pre-financing, technical assistance and numerous programs focusing on improving the quality of coffee grown and harvested.
Coffee is selectively harvested by hand and pulped the same day the cherries arrive at the local mill. After fermentation between 12-24 hours the coffee is washed and then laid on covered raised beds for at least 10 days to dry.
