This coffee comes to us from a collection of small producers near the town of Sandoná in Nariño, Colombia. Why are some of our coffees brought in as blends of different producers while we have other coffees that are from individual farmers? Part of the answer has to do with how much coffee each farmer actually produces. Most coffee farmers in Colombia only own 1-2 hectares of land, which is only enough to produce 2-4 bags of coffee per year, which is often not enough to be bought as a single lot of coffee from most roasters. As farmers around the area bring their harvests into the local coffee receiving station, each lot is kept separate until it can be tasted and compared for quality. From there, the coffees are presented to exporters who can make a decision to blend lots or keep them separate. In this case, the exporter we work with decided to blend the small lots that make up the larger offering.
