Oscar Mendez has a bit of a radical approach to the cultivation of his coffee. The coffee grows free-range, planted in and amongst flowers and trees, which in turn attract birds and insects creating excellent biodiversity. Although the Genesis Micro-mill is not certified, organic practices are fundamental to these producers.
At peak harvest four families aid in cherry collection. These families are migrants from Nicaragua that have invested their life savings in their small plots. Oscar believes that this is a very important cultural interaction. He is very excited that we at Transcend Coffee take the time to acknowledge them as social the aspects of coffee production.
"In Costa Rica coffee is more than a culture, it is a tradition that is carried in our blood. In my case, this tradition has been a part of me since early childhood to the present day. I am a coffee farmer because working with these plants is very energizing. These vibrations are transmitted to shrubs, a good canopy of different trees, and flowers while attracting birds and insects and a large amount of biodiversity. We are giving back to Mother Earth."
