For a long time home coffee brewers had a difficult choice to make when it came to grinders, either break the bank to get an excellent quality conical burr grinder, or settle for lower-priced units with questionable quality.
With the release of the new Baratza Encore, there's no longer a need to compromise.
Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has the accurate coarse grind for popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. The specially designed burrs give a precise grind with minimal fines for a flavorful, balanced extraction when making espresso.
The efficient DC motor keeps your beans cool, even during extended grind times, while a combination of electric and gear speed reducers slow the burr to 450 RPM, ensuring a smooth bean feed and reducing noise, heat and static buildup.
Burrs: Manufactured in Europe, the Encore’s 40 mm conical burrs will grind for many styles of coffee. Conical burr grinders are exceptional at producing consistent grinds from very fine to very coarse as well as being durable and will remain sharp for many years.
Gearbox: In 2012, Baratza introduced the second generation Gearbox (GB 2.0). With GB 2.0, Baratza has significantly increased the strength and durability of the drive transmission while decreasing noise. In addition to a new drive shaft, motor mounting plate and bushings, this change includes a new drive gear made of 15% glass filled thermo plastic which is quieter than the prior metal gear, wears better and is more shock resistant. During the Encore’s rigorous testing process, stainless steel screws were thrown into the burrs, and in every case the motor/gear/burrs stopped immediately, the (automatically-resettable) thermal cutout was triggered, and the gears were fine.
Grind Adjustment: Turn the hopper and with 40 settings you can quickly adjust from fine for espresso to coarse for French Press. The grind range is from 250 to 1200 microns.
Grinds Left in Grinder: To maximize freshness, the Encore minimizes the ground coffee left in the grinder.
Brewing Methods: The Encore is a great grinder for manual brewing and espresso.
Motor: A powerful, high torque DC motor effortlessly drives the burrs. This motor turns slowly resulting in cool, quiet operation and permits long grinding duty-cycles. The circuitry is equipped with an automatically resetting, thermal cutoff switch.
Calibration: An innovative burr calibration system ensures that each grinder has the full range of grind. If necessary, the grinders can be user calibrated.
Speed Control: With unique speed control, the Encore uses a combination of gear and electronic speed reduction to control the rotation of the burr to 450 RPM. The electronic speed controller is adjustable from 405 to 495 RPM in the event that specific user conditions require modification of the speed. This slow speed reduces heat, noise, and static generation in the grinder. It also ensures that the beans feed smoothly into the burrs.
On-off Switch: The Encore has an easy on-off switch.
Cleaning: Burrs are easily removable with no tools, making cleaning very easy.

Best grinder we have bought (and there have been quite a few), just working out the static issues.

If you are looking for a quality grinder at an affordable price go with this one!
I tried the cuisanart burr grinder and it was poor quality. Returned it and got this one. Very happy so far. I'm using it for coarse to medium grinder (drip brewer, french press, and aeropress). Haven't tried espresso grind.

I have now used this grinder for a little over a month and am so happy to have made its' purchase. I previously used a blade coffee grinder, and prior to buying had researched the variety of conical grinders. The Baratza is easy to use, fast and I have noticed that the ground coffee is uniform vs chunks/powder with the blade variety. There is quite a range of grind and I find for my electric drip machine, setting 10 works well. Shipping was amazing, I ordered it just after Christmas, on a weekend and it arrived within two-three days. I would also recommend watching Poul Marks online course to learn about all things coffee - very informative. My simple cup of coffee each morning has improved! So very pleased with Transcend.

I have gone through two cheaper grinders (~$50 - $80) before this, and in the end I'd have saved money just buying this one in the first place.
I use this for french press and pour-over methods, so I can't comment on the finest grind settings, but for what I do it is phenomenal. Very consistent grind, so you won't have an inch of mud at the bottom of your coffee cup after a french press. Easy to clean when required, and while I haven't had it very long, I can tell it is much sturdier and way better designed/built than the Krupp grinder I had before this. Very impressed.
Easy to use, durable, good value, and the taste of my coffees has even improved.

I had been using a machine with a built in grinder for years but I must say I am much happier with the stand alone grinder. Previously, I had no control over the grind and it was difficult to get consistent amounts of coffee from one brew cycle to the next. I think this unit is probably versatile enough for most users. I'm using it exclusively for coffee at the moment but I've seen a number of reviews where they are being used for espresso successfully. If you're in the market for a grinder at a great price I think you've found it here. The service from Transcend was excellent as always! The grinder shipped just hours after I ordered it. Thank you!

The slow speed doesn't damage the coffee. Nice range of grind size. I have a Gaggia Baby and found 8 to be perfect setting. Anything finer tended to impede the flow. The omnidirectional on/off switch allows you to operate by touch without looking at the switch.

This grinder is sufficient for my needs and a great step up from the cheaper burr grinders I've been using. The grind is consistent and the coffee tastes better, the anti-static container really works and keeps the coffee inside (rather than leaking all over the counter like my old one), the machine is fairly quiet and easy to use. I watched a lot of online videos and read reviews before making my decision to step up to a better quality grinder. This Baratza impressed me as a reasonably-priced but good quality grinder that would be easy for me to use and wouldn't take up a lot of space on the counter. Since it was sold by Transcend, I felt pretty confident that it would be worth the investment. The service was speedy--the grinder arrived just days after I placed the order. Very pleased!
